Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed the country’s steadfast non-aligned foreign policy and called for balanced, mutually beneficial economic partnerships with all major global powers during his address at the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, Russia, on Thursday (3/9/2026).
Attending as a guest of honor at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Prabowo highlighted that openness and non-alignment have underpinned Jakarta’s diplomatic doctrine for decades. He stated that Indonesia remains resolute in staying out of any military pacts to help preserve regional and international stability.
Turning to economic cooperation, President Prabowo stressed that national self-reliance remains Indonesia's strategic focus, though foreign investment remains welcome. Jakarta advocates a fair-trade model designed to yield equitable gains for all stakeholders while expanding the global reach of Indonesian goods and services.
Indonesia’s international engagements, the President reiterated, will never be leveraged against any third party or competing geopolitical bloc. Jakarta guarantees a level playing field for all global partners and investors, governed by the rule of law and mutual respect.
During the plenary, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted Indonesia’s expanding geopolitical weight, citing its substantial population and status as the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation as factors that make Jakarta an essential player alongside regional powerhouses such as China and India.
Indonesia’s participation in the EEF underscores its proactive diplomacy in an increasingly multipolar era: maintaining equal distance from major-power rivalries, safeguarding an independent foreign policy, and channeling international alliances toward domestic economic development.
